Value Urban Trees memorial planting

  • Dawson Reserve 999 Sydney Road Coburg North, VIC, 3058 Australia (map)

In early 2022 the State Government destroyed more significant trees along the Upfield shared path / train corridor - this time to make way for a car park expansion at Merlynston. Residents and the Upfield Urban Forest requested the logs from a beautiful giant blue gum and a stunning Manna Gum remain in the community. Moreland City Council staff helped to place the logs and have purchased some indigenous plants for residents to plant around the logs on Saturday July 23rd 2022.
Please come and assist Jane and other local residents to plant some lovely native grasses, flowers and ground covers to make a beautiful, reflective space for community members - especially children - to explore.
BRING: Digging equipment, gloves, water to drink and a snack to share (if you have time + inclination!)
WHERE: Dawson McGregor Reserve, corner Sydney Road and Shorts Road Coburg North (about 40m east of the Upfield train line, a 5-10-minute walk south of Merlynston Station)

We’ll be planting around the logs from trees felled by the Victorian Government. These are now located at Dawson Reserve on Sydney Road, a very short walk from the Upfield Line.

The lovely white-trunked Manna Gum cut down at corner of Shorts Road and the Upfield Shared Path in March 2022 to make way for a huge expansion of the Merlynston Station car park. The devastation occurred despite the community (via consultation) declaring tree retention was their highest priority and Moreland City Council advocating to the State Government that the car park be improved but not expanded. This was one of 11 significant trees ultimately removed.

No photo could capture the splendor of this huge Blue Gum, also cut down in March. Its trunk is now located at Dawson McGregor Reserve, about 50m from where it grew.
